Signs of Google’s refined new account switcher keep popping up in more and more apps (APK teardown)

Google continues to navigate its development timeline with a mix of urgency and deliberation, as it works on enhancements to its account switcher for Android applications. While the rollout of this feature remains pending, recent updates suggest that progress is being made.

Progress in the Account Switcher Development

In late August, initial indications emerged that Google was revamping the account switcher interface to align more closely with the web experience. A few weeks later, glimpses of this new design appeared in Gmail, signaling a positive shift, albeit not yet available to the public. Fast forward two months, and we are now observing further advancements as additional Google applications prepare for this update.

Our exploration today focuses on several key applications, including:

  • The Google app (version 15.47.26.sa.arm64 beta)
  • Google Maps (version 24.47.04.699095382 beta)
  • Google Calendar (version 2024.46.1-697566923-release)
  • Google Keep (version 5.24.472.00.90)

In these versions, users can now manually access the in-development account switcher. This functionality showcases a blend of new menu elements for features and settings in applications like Google Maps and the Google app, while others, such as Calendar and Keep, maintain a simpler interface.

Although we are not maintaining a comprehensive list of applications featuring this change, the trend suggests that Google is gearing up for a broader deployment of the revamped interface. It appears that the company may not need to synchronize the launch across all its apps, but the current pace hints that many of its primary Android applications could be ready for the transition shortly.
