The White House’s dodgy app is being pushed to even more official government devices

In a recent development, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that The White House app will be automatically installed on all official government devices. This decision, communicated through an email to DHS employees and reported by Politico, underscores the government’s belief in the app’s utility, despite its limited functionality.

Concerns Over Security and Privacy

Initially launched a few months ago, The White House app serves primarily as a simple wrapper for the official White House website, providing access to information that is largely available through other channels. Nonetheless, the DHS describes the app as “a convenient way to access official White House communications,” including announcements, executive actions, speeches, livestreams, and videos.

However, the app has raised eyebrows due to several security and privacy concerns. Notably, it incorporates code from Elfsight, a software kit company founded in Russia. While the White House asserts that Elfsight underwent a comprehensive security review and received approval for use, the choice remains contentious. Reports indicate that Elfsight previously exposed personal information of some White House staffers, which the administration attributed to a “vulnerability on Elfsight’s side.”

The implications of using this app extend beyond its origins. It has been flagged for sharing sensitive user data, including time zones, IP addresses, and device models, with third-party services. This raises significant concerns regarding data privacy, particularly for regular users who may not be aware of the extent of information being shared.

The push for The White House app’s installation is not limited to the DHS. Last month, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began automatically installing the app on all FAA-issued iPhones and iPads. This move is particularly ironic given the documented security issues associated with the app, especially considering its deployment on devices utilized by the Department of Homeland Security.
