This new feature is basically AirDrop but for Windows PCs and Android

In an exciting development for users navigating the realms of both Windows PCs and Android devices, a new feature is set to enhance file sharing capabilities. This innovation allows for seamless transfer of files back and forth, utilizing the Phone Link and Link to Windows applications. The integration promises a user-friendly experience, leveraging the built-in sharing menus of each device, making the process feel intuitive and familiar.

The rollout of this functionality is currently underway for Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel, indicating that a broader release to the general public is on the horizon. It’s important to note that this feature is distinct from the previously introduced “cross-device copy and paste” functionality that has been part of Phone Link since 2020.

AirDrop for Windows

Mirroring the convenience of Apple’s AirDrop, this new feature establishes a connection between Windows PCs and Android devices, allowing users to share files effortlessly. While various methods for file sharing exist, this particular functionality stands out due to its simplicity and ease of use. By utilizing the built-in share menu of the source device, users can send files to or from their PC with a few straightforward steps, akin to sharing content through their favorite applications.

To utilize this feature, users will need a computer running Windows 10 (May 2019 update or later) or Windows 11, paired with an Android smartphone operating on version 9.0 or later. These requirements are not overly stringent, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of devices. Additionally, the Link to Windows app on the smartphone must be updated to version 1.24032.518.0 or later, while the Phone Link on the PC should be at least version 1.24032.156.0.

According to Microsoft’s support documentation, sharing files from a PC to an Android device involves a few simple steps:

  1. Select the file you wish to share on your PC.
  2. Right-click on the file and choose “Share.”
  3. Locate Phone Link in the App Section of the share pop-up window.
  4. The file sharing process will commence on your mobile device connected to Phone Link.
  5. Ensure that Windows notifications for Phone Link are enabled to track the file sharing progress in real-time.

Upon following these steps, users will receive a notification on their phone from the Link to Windows app. Tapping this notification will allow them to access and open the shared file.

How to share files from your Android device to your PC

Sharing files from an Android device back to a PC follows a similarly straightforward process:

  1. Select the file you wish to share.
  2. Tap the “Share” button.
  3. Find Link to Windows – Send to PC in the app section of the system Share Drawer.
  4. Access the device list page and click on the connected device to initiate sharing.

  6. The status will update to “Sent” once the file transfer is finalized.

Once the file is sent, Phone Link will notify the PC, providing an action button to open the newly received file. This reciprocal sharing capability enhances the synergy between Windows and Android, making it easier than ever for users to manage their files across devices.
