For individuals who rely on the same app for both spheres, the Work Profile offers a unique solution: two distinct versions of an application. For example, you can maintain a personal Gmail account alongside a work-related one, each residing in its own designated space.
From a privacy perspective, this separation is paramount. Data within the Work Profile remains encrypted and is accessible only to your organization’s IT administrators, ensuring that personal applications and data remain untouched and private, regardless of whether the device is company-owned or personal. To help users distinguish between work and personal applications, a briefcase icon appears in the Android status bar whenever a work app is in use. Closing the app will remove the icon, and users have the option to temporarily pause or completely delete their Work Profile, should they choose to do so.
How to temporarily turn off the Work Profile on your Android phone
Pausing the Work Profile on your Android device is a straightforward process. Once paused, work apps—those adorned with the briefcase icon—will vanish from the app drawer, and notifications from these applications will cease until the Work Profile is reactivated. On certain devices, these apps may still be visible but will appear grayed out, accompanied by a crossed-out briefcase icon in the status bar to indicate that the Work Profile is paused.
To temporarily disable your Work Profile, you can choose from two convenient methods:
- Access the Quick Settings panel by pulling down from the top of the screen and tapping the briefcase icon. If it’s not visible, consider adding it to your Quick Settings first.

For those seeking a more comprehensive solution, a factory reset of the Android device serves as another method to delete the Work Profile. However, this option will also erase personal apps and data, so it should be approached with caution.
