Why There’s A Briefcase Symbol On Your Android Phone’s Screen (And How To Turn It Off)

In the realm of mobile technology, Android has introduced a feature that caters specifically to employees seeking a seamless balance between work and personal life. This innovative functionality creates a dedicated workspace on your device, isolating the applications used for professional tasks from those meant for personal use. For individuals who rely on the same app for both spheres, the Work Profile offers a unique solution: two distinct versions of an application. For example, you can maintain a personal Gmail account alongside a work-related one, each residing in its own designated space.

From a privacy perspective, this separation is paramount. Data within the Work Profile remains encrypted and is accessible only to your organization’s IT administrators, ensuring that personal applications and data remain untouched and private, regardless of whether the device is company-owned or personal. To help users distinguish between work and personal applications, a briefcase icon appears in the Android status bar whenever a work app is in use. Closing the app will remove the icon, and users have the option to temporarily pause or completely delete their Work Profile, should they choose to do so.

How to temporarily turn off the Work Profile on your Android phone

Pausing the Work Profile on your Android device is a straightforward process. Once paused, work apps—those adorned with the briefcase icon—will vanish from the app drawer, and notifications from these applications will cease until the Work Profile is reactivated. On certain devices, these apps may still be visible but will appear grayed out, accompanied by a crossed-out briefcase icon in the status bar to indicate that the Work Profile is paused.

To temporarily disable your Work Profile, you can choose from two convenient methods:

  • Access the Quick Settings panel by pulling down from the top of the screen and tapping the briefcase icon. If it’s not visible, consider adding it to your Quick Settings first.
  • Alternatively, navigate to the app drawer, select the Work tab, and tap Pause work apps located in the bottom-right corner. If the button is absent, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and select Work.

When you’re ready to resume work, simply reactivate the Work Profile through either the Quick Settings or the app drawer. For those who prefer a more automated approach, Android’s Digital Wellbeing settings allow you to schedule the activation and deactivation of your Work Profile:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select Digital Wellbeing.
  3. Under “Ways to disconnect,” choose Work apps schedule.
  4. Enable Schedule work apps.
  5. Set your desired start and end times, along with the days of the week for when your Work Profile should be active.

Outside of this designated schedule, your Work Profile will remain paused, restricting access to your work applications.

How to permanently disable the Work Profile on your Android phone

While pausing the Work Profile is beneficial for after-hours or vacation time, some may wish to eliminate it entirely. To achieve this, one must delete the Work Profile from the Android device, which not only removes the briefcase icon but also erases all associated work apps and local data.

It’s important to note that deletion of the Work Profile is only possible if the device was originally yours or if the company has transferred ownership to you. If you meet these criteria, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select Passwords and accounts.
  3. Navigate to the Work tab.
  4. Tap on Remove work profile.
  5. In the confirmation popup, select Delete.
  6. Ensure that the device policy app has been uninstalled.

For those seeking a more comprehensive solution, a factory reset of the Android device serves as another method to delete the Work Profile. However, this option will also erase personal apps and data, so it should be approached with caution.
