Microsoft Expands Xbox Mobile App Capabilities
Microsoft is set to enhance its Xbox mobile app for Android, allowing users in the United States to purchase and play Xbox games directly on their devices starting next month. This significant update comes on the heels of a recent court ruling that mandates Google to discontinue its requirement for Google Play Billing for apps in the Play Store, effective November 1st.
In a statement shared on X, Xbox president Sarah Bond expressed enthusiasm about the ruling, noting, “The court’s ruling to open up Google’s mobile store in the US will allow more choice and flexibility. Our mission is to allow more players to play on more devices, so we are thrilled to share that starting in November, players will be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android.”
This update will empower Microsoft to sell Xbox games directly through the Android app, integrating purchasing capabilities that have long been anticipated by users. Additionally, the app will feature Xbox Cloud Gaming, enabling players to stream games to their phones immediately after making a purchase.
Interestingly, the rationale behind Microsoft’s previous decision to withhold game purchases within its Android app remains unclear, especially considering that other platforms, such as Steam and the PlayStation Store, already facilitate mobile purchases. While inquiries have been directed to Microsoft for further clarification, the company has indicated that Bond’s announcement is the extent of their current communication on the matter.
Furthermore, Microsoft is also in the process of developing a browser-based Xbox mobile store, which was initially expected to launch in July. This initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to enhancing accessibility and convenience for gamers across various devices.
