Your Google TV homescreen might not look so stale, as a redesign enters testing

What you need to know

  • Google TV is reportedly testing a small homescreen redesign for users in a recent update.
  • The company has reworked its profile menu slightly, adding in two options, while it revamps the look of its navigational bar with a Search icon included.
  • Google TV has been kept relatively quiet as of late, though a more major update brought the smart home “Home Panel” to even more users.

A recent report suggests that Google TV is in the midst of testing a subtle yet significant redesign of its home screen, which could enhance user experience and accessibility to content. This development was brought to light by 9to5Google, following a tip that included real-life images of the redesign as seen on a user’s television. The snapshots reveal a noteworthy adjustment in the profile menu, indicating that Google has shifted the placement of “your Library and Watchlist” beneath the profile icon on the homescreen.

This redesign was introduced in version 1.0.806977084 of Google TV. As is often the case with Google’s updates, this test appears to be limited to a select group of users initially. This approach allows the company to gather valuable feedback and make any necessary adjustments before a broader rollout.

A little TLC for Google TV

While Google TV has maintained a relatively low profile in terms of updates, it did recently unveil a personal control center-like feature known as the “Home Panel.” This panel, which debuted alongside the TV Streamer last year, enables users to monitor their smart devices directly from their television. From the comfort of their couch, viewers can manage various devices such as cameras, doorbell cameras, and even control lighting—all through their TV and remote.

In addition to the Home Panel, Google TV has rolled out enhancements that include a dedicated Sports tab and integration with Gemini for an enriched viewing experience. Furthermore, a smaller audio-focused update now allows users to select their preferred audio format, offering options such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, and PCM Stereo. These incremental improvements reflect Google TV’s ongoing commitment to refining user experience and expanding functionality.
