EDB Releases PGD 6.4 with Quorum Commit, Bringing True Distributed Consistency to Mission-Critical Postgres

WILMINGTON, Del., May 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — EnterpriseDB (EDB), recognized as a leader in sovereign AI and data solutions, has unveiled EDB Postgres Distributed (PGD) 6.4. This latest iteration serves as a robust distributed transactional foundation for EDB Postgres® AI, introducing three pivotal features that enhance durability and simplify architecture for high-stakes financial and infrastructure applications.

New Features in PGD 6.4

The release of PGD 6.4 introduces:

  • Quorum Commit: Ensures true cross-node distributed consistency.
  • Integrated Connection Pooling: Facilitated through the native Connection Manager.
  • Support for Large Objects: Full replication capabilities for PostgreSQL large objects.

These advancements are designed to meet the increasing demand for sovereign control over critical data, a trend that Gartner predicts will see over 75% of enterprises in Europe and the Middle East geopatriating workloads by 2030.

Quorum Commit: A Game Changer

The standout feature, Quorum Commit, introduces a pre-commit coordination mechanism that establishes a coherent global truth across all nodes in a cluster prior to any local transaction commitment. This innovation addresses the challenges of traditional synchronous replication, which only confirms that a replica has received a record. Instead, Quorum Commit synchronizes concurrent writes across data centers in real time.

To illustrate, consider a scenario involving a credit card used across different regions. In a standard replication setup, simultaneous charges could each pass local balance checks and commit independently, potentially resulting in overspending. Quorum Commit resolves this by ensuring consensus is reached before either transaction completes, allowing the first transaction to be committed while the second is declined at the point of sale.

Jozef de Vries, SVP of Database Engineering at EDB, emphasized the significance of this feature: “Postgres has become the de facto standard for modern applications. PGD 6.4 now delivers the same distributed consistency that legacy systems offered, but in a fully Postgres-native format.”

Connection Manager Pooling: Streamlined Operations

PGD 6.4 enhances the built-in Connection Manager introduced in PGD 6.0 by incorporating native connection pooling. This development eliminates the reliance on external poolers like pgBouncer in most production environments. The integration with PGD’s Raft consensus layer allows for unique capabilities, including:

  • Cluster-aware routing at both cluster and region levels.
  • Automatic failover routing that adapts to consensus changes in real time.
  • Unified observability via PostgreSQL’s logging and monitoring views.

This architectural improvement significantly simplifies operations for organizations managing extensive clusters, such as payment processors utilizing thousands of CPU cores, reducing operational complexity without compromising throughput or connection capacity.

Large Object Support: Expanding Capabilities

With the addition of full replication support for PostgreSQL large objects, PGD 6.4 broadens the scope of distributed Postgres. This feature allows applications managing scanned documents, image archives, and mixed transactional and unstructured data to thrive within a single database environment. Such capabilities are particularly beneficial for financial institutions, government agencies, and healthcare operators that often maintain hybrid schemas alongside core transactional tables.

PGD 6.4 is now available as a stand-alone distribution and will be integrated into EDB Postgres AI in June. For further technical details, including documentation and upgrade guidance, visit enterprisedb.com/docs/pgd.
