Crackdown on Fraudulent Investment Apps
In a decisive move to protect consumers, Google has removed two counterfeit investment apps from the Android Play Store. The action followed a notification from the Gurugram Police, who are intensifying efforts to combat cybercrime within the district. The swift removal of these apps underscores Google’s commitment to user safety and its responsive collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
The cybercrime police station in Gurugram, led by SHO Naveen, identified the apps named FHT and SS-Equitrade as vehicles for online fraud. SHO Naveen highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, “By using these apps, the cyber fraudsters lured people promising good returns on their investments.” He further revealed that the FHT app had been downloaded by approximately 155,000 individuals. The SHO’s message to the public was clear: exercise caution and verify information before making any online investments to avoid falling prey to cyber fraud.
Google’s Vigilance in App Security
Google’s recent announcement revealed a significant uptick in app removals from the Play Store, with over 2.28 million apps banned in 2023 alone. This figure represents a substantial increase from the 1.43 million apps barred in the previous year. In addition to app removals, Google has terminated 333,000 potentially harmful developer accounts.
