Google Wallet Arrives for Android Users in India
New Delhi: In a move that expands its digital ecosystem, Google has introduced the Google Wallet app to Android users in India. This new app is designed to securely house digital versions of items such as boarding passes, loyalty cards, event tickets, and public transport passes. The launch marks the arrival of a complementary service to the already popular Google Pay.
According to Ram Papatla, GM and India Engineering Lead for Android at Google, Google Wallet aims to cater to non-payment related needs. “Google Pay will continue to be our flagship payment app,” Papatla explained, “but Google Wallet is our response to the growing demand for a dedicated space for non-financial items. We’ve created an open platform that encourages carriers, OEMs, and developers to innovate and create exceptional products.”
The integration of Google Wallet into the lives of Indian consumers is expected to be seamless. The app enables users to digitally store a variety of items, including movie and event tickets, boarding passes, metro tickets, office badges, and even digitized physical documents. Google has already forged partnerships with 20 prominent Indian brands, such as Air India, IndiGo, Flipkart, Pine Labs, and cinema chains like PVR and INOX. The tech giant anticipates adding more partners in the near future.
Google’s statement highlighted the convenience offered by Google Wallet, describing it as a centralized and secure location for essential items that people use daily. Papatla hinted at the potential for an all-encompassing app in the future, one that would merge payment and non-payment functionalities. However, for now, the focus remains on creating value, engaging users, onboarding new partners, and building trust.
Papatla emphasized Google’s commitment to security and privacy, stating that these principles are the bedrock upon which Google Wallet has been developed. The company continues to prioritize offering an open, choice-rich, and secure platform for its users.
