This latest version brings a host of improvements, with a focus on user privacy, adherence to accessibility standards, and a transition to a Kotlin codebase for better performance and reliability.
The application’s facelift includes a more intuitive user interface, which retains the beloved features of the previous version while introducing a more streamlined and aesthetically pleasing design. Himmat Bains, the Head of Product at Private Internet Access, emphasized the importance of maintaining familiarity for users while enhancing the overall look and feel. Android users are currently getting a first glimpse of these changes, with a full rollout expected on all platforms by year’s end.
A significant addition to the app is the integration of Shadowsocks, a feature that has been eagerly anticipated by users for its ability to bolster security and privacy. Bains highlighted the team’s dedication to constantly evolving the service to protect users amidst growing digital insecurities.
Accessibility is a cornerstone of the new application, which is developed in line with the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). The update introduces innovative features such as a location picker, dark mode, and detailed connection and traffic information, all designed to create a seamless experience for users with diverse accessibility needs.
The inclusion of Shadowsocks is particularly noteworthy. This open-source proxy project is a boon for users in regions with restrictive internet policies, as it enables them to mask their connections, circumvent firewalls, and evade censorship. Combined with PIA’s robust VPN features, this protocol offers an even stronger privacy shield for users.
The switch to a Kotlin codebase is another pivotal aspect of the revamp. Kotlin is celebrated for its efficiency and simplicity, which translates into faster feature rollouts and updates. Iva Nedeleva, Principal Android Engineer at PIA, shared that this transition has led to a dramatic increase in development speed, allowing the team to implement new features in a fraction of the time previously required.
