Rivian Embraces Android Automotive for Its EV Software
In a recent revelation, it has come to light that Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer known for its innovative R1T and R1S models, has been using Google’s Android Automotive as the foundation for its in-car software experience. This detail, confirmed by both Google and Rivian, was previously a matter of speculation among tech and automotive enthusiasts.
The heart of Rivian’s software system, which will also be implemented in the forthcoming R2 and R3 models, is Android Automotive. Despite its Android roots, Rivian’s platform is tailored specifically for its vehicles, controlling a myriad of features within the electric vehicles.
While Android Automotive serves as the “base OS” for Rivian’s software, the company has made it clear that this is distinct from Android Auto. Rivian is committed to crafting a unique owner experience, focusing on in-house development of integrated software and native applications.
Android Automotive is Google’s dedicated platform for vehicles, designed to host the infotainment system through Android. Automakers have the flexibility to customize this platform extensively and can choose to integrate Google services—or not, as Rivian has opted to do so far.
At the recent Google I/O event, announcements were made about the expansion of app availability for Android Automotive, including the introduction of Google Cast. Rivian is set to be the first to feature Cast, and it will also be integrating the YouTube app in an upcoming software update.
Rivian’s approach to its software stack is to maintain a “vertically integrated hardware and software stack,” as highlighted in a blog post about the new Cast and YouTube functionalities. While Android Automotive OS is a component of their system, the company emphasizes the extensive work done by its software engineers to create the unique user experience present in R1 vehicles.
What does the use of Android Automotive as a base mean for Rivian’s future? It suggests that while Rivian’s software may be heavily customized and not immediately identifiable as Android Automotive, there is potential for more Android apps to be integrated into Rivian’s system, as evidenced by the recent additions of Cast and YouTube.
