Microsoft lays out a buffet of Windows goodies for JavaScript Developers

Microsoft has introduced "dynamic projections" that allow developers using JavaScript and TypeScript to access Windows internals more easily. The Windows Runtime API (WinRT) projection for Node.js is currently in public preview, simplifying access to Windows features without introducing new capabilities. A new single Node runtime package, dynwinrt, enables developers to generate JavaScript wrappers and TypeScript declarations for Windows features, while the winappCli package offers a command-line interface for setup and sample code. This setup utilizes Windows Metadata (winmd) to dynamically list available Windows APIs, automatically updating wrappers or declarations when API metadata changes. Developers can access various Windows functionalities, excluding UI elements, and utilize local AI capabilities for tasks such as text generation and image manipulation. Microsoft’s developments aim to align with industry trends rather than enforce a proprietary ecosystem.

Own These Ubisoft Games on Xbox? You Can Now Play Them on PC for Free

Ubisoft and Xbox have launched an initiative allowing players who own select Ubisoft titles on Xbox consoles to access the PC versions of those games at no extra cost. Starting today, new digital purchases will provide immediate access to both Xbox and PC versions. Existing owners will also benefit, although the availability of PC versions will be rolled out gradually, with full implementation expected by August 4. Ubisoft now lets Xbox console players unlock select PC games for free

Additionally, a new game redemption offer allows players who own select Ubisoft titles on Xbox consoles to access these games on the Ubisoft Connect app for PC at no extra cost. The eligible titles include Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Far Cry 6, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Riders Republic, Skull and Bones, The Crew 2, The Crew Motorfest, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, and Watch Dogs Legion. Customers purchasing a digital version of these titles will receive both Xbox console and PC versions. Existing owners of the Xbox digital versions will gain access to the PC versions by August 4. The offer does not allow for claiming console versions of games owned on PC, and while most downloadable content will transfer, in-game currency and one-time-use content will not. Users should update the Ubisoft Connect client to utilize this feature.

Stalker 2’s engine upgrade and first story expansion are due out in August

The pre-release review period for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 featured numerous glitches and challenges, including silenced gunfire and stalled quests, but also showcased the game's potential. GSC Game World announced the first story DLC titled "Cost of Hope," which will explore the ideologies of the Zone's factions, Duty and Freedom, and introduce new territories, allies, foes, and weapons. Additionally, a significant 2.0 update will upgrade the game from Unreal Engine 5.1 to 5.5.4, bringing new features and content free for existing players. FreeBSD Developing New NTSYNC Driver For Accelerating Windows NT Sync Primitives

The FreeBSD project released its Q2-2026 status report, highlighting several advancements, including the introduction of an AMD ROCm port and the development of a new NTSYNC driver. Enhancements for desktop and laptop users included porting the latest graphics driver code, transferring WiFi driver code from Linux, improving suspend and resume functionalities, enhancing support for the Framework Laptop, implementing suspend-to-disk capabilities, and refining the audio stack. Microsoft moves to end pirated Windows activations

Microsoft is introducing the KMS Hardware Secured system to enhance Windows licensing security by making unauthorized activation methods more difficult. Ubisoft says the Black Flag remake has exceeded ‘annual expectations’ in just two weeks, shortly after it laid off a number of the people who made it

Steam Week in Review: A torrent of janky retail sims continues to flood Steam, and there’s no end in sight

Smaller studios are contributing to the genre, indicating demand for well-crafted retail sims. The top sellers on Steam from July 14-21 included "Counter-Strike 2," "Palworld," and "Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced." "The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu," released on July 15, received nearly 1,500 "mostly positive" reviews.
