Steam Week in Review: A torrent of janky retail sims continues to flood Steam, and there’s no end in sight

The retail simulator genre on Steam has surged in popularity since its explosive arrival in late 2024, and the steady stream of new releases continues to captivate audiences. Last week alone saw the launch of 14 new retail sims, a testament to the genre’s enduring appeal, despite many titles sporting a simplistic aesthetic. Notably, the definition of a “retail sim” can be quite selective; for instance, idle games or horror-themed titles set in retail environments, such as Shift at Midnight, do not make the cut in this classification.

Among the recent releases, Mall Together stood out, attracting over 1,000 concurrent players. Its unique selling point lies in the ability to construct an entire shopping mall rather than just a single store. Interestingly, this title is also the only one from last week to feature an AI disclosure regarding its capsule art, hinting at the growing trend of AI-generated visuals within the gaming industry.

What connects the more successful retail sims? At first glance, not much, aside from the inclusion of online cooperative play. However, titles like TCG Card Shop Simulator and Retro Rewind – Video Store Simulator have thrived as single-player experiences, suggesting that cooperative features are not the sole determinant of success.

It’s worth noting that the sheer volume of retail sims being released can feel overwhelming. Two of last week’s new titles, Model Kit Shop Simulator and Wild West Miner Simulator: First Gun, were published by PlayWay, a prolific publisher that has launched four games since July 20 alone. With a staggering 474 products listed on Steam, many of which are still in development, PlayWay’s strategy appears to involve announcing a multitude of games and only fully developing those that garner sufficient interest through wishlists.

This approach raises questions about the quality of many titles in the genre, with some critics labeling them as shovelware. Yet, PlayWay has also produced notable titles like House Flipper 2 and Thief Simulator, indicating that not all their releases lack depth or effort. The retail sim market is a gamble for publishers; a niche concept could either flourish or flop, depending on the execution and timing of its release.

Smaller studios, such as Blood Pact Studios and Caikemi, are also contributing to the genre, demonstrating that there is a genuine demand for well-crafted retail sims. These developers are putting significant effort into their projects, contrasting with the rapid-fire approach of larger publishers. However, as history has shown, high demand often leads to a flood of less inspired clones.

Top Steam games by revenue (July 14 – 21)

Steam’s top sellers chart reveals little in terms of groundbreaking new releases, but the anticipated launch of Palworld has propelled it to the forefront. Surprisingly, Counter-Strike 2 has maintained its position, alongside the enduring popularity of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, particularly with the recent remake of Black Flag.

Last week’s Steam deep cuts

The recent release of The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu indicates a quieter week on Steam, having garnered nearly 1,500 “mostly positive” reviews since its launch on July 15.

“10/10. Would sledge hammer a rat to throw its meat at someone drinking gas out of the pump to then 360 a doppleganger before restocking the ramen.” John Tesco highlights the unexpected layers of complexity found in Shift At Midnight.
