Microsoft announces plans to let you put the taskbar in Windows 11 pretty much anywhere you want

Microsoft is enhancing Windows 11 by improving the configurability of the taskbar and Start menu. Users can now position the taskbar on any edge of the desktop and align the Start button and icons in various configurations. A vertical taskbar option is available in slim or wider variants, and a thinner taskbar is designed for lower resolution displays. The Start menu will feature section-level toggles to show or hide Pinned, Recommended, and All sections, along with options to adjust its size and conceal personal information. The Recommended section will be rebranded as Recent, with improved accuracy in displaying recently installed applications and files. These updates will first be rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel over the coming weeks, with a public release expected in the next few months.

Windows 11 tests an adjustable taskbar and resizable Start menu

Windows 11 Insiders can now reposition the taskbar to the bottom, top, left, or right side of their screens. Users can adjust the size of the Start menu with "Small" and "Large" options, and customize the alignment of icons within the taskbar. The Start menu will feature a new layout with toggles to show or hide sections like “Pinned,” “Recommended” (rebranded as “Recent”), and “All.” Users can also hide personal details from the Start menu during presentations or screen sharing. These features will roll out in the coming weeks to the Experimental Channel.

Google has launched the Google Health app, rebranding the existing Fitbit application, but it will phase out several features that longtime Fitbit users relied on. The badge system will be completely removed, and users will lose unique usernames, profile pictures, direct messaging, and community feeds. Child profiles will no longer allow adding friends, and the weekly leaderboard will only focus on steps and cardio load. In health and wellness, minute-by-minute stress check graphs will no longer be available, and detailed skin temperature data will be replaced with daily and weekly trends. Users cannot set calorie targets through food plans anymore, although they can set macronutrient goals. Recipes for Google Health Premium users will also be discontinued, and daily fitness plans will shift to weekly ones. Sleep features will be reduced, with the discontinuation of sleep profiles, monthly sleep animals, and the Estimated Oxygen Variation (EOV) feature. Premium subscribers will now use the Health Coach for personalized sleep responses, and snore detection on certain devices will be eliminated. The app will maintain compatibility with Health Connect and Apple Health but will no longer support connections to Lifescan devices, affecting users who monitor blood glucose levels. Users can log glucose data manually, but reminders and symptom tracking will be removed.

WhatsApp’s Metaverse-inspired ‘Avatars’ are being removed from the app

WhatsApp is discontinuing its avatar feature, as confirmed by Meta. Users are receiving notifications about the removal of avatars and their editing capabilities, which were introduced in late 2022. The associated sticker feature will also be removed, although a specific timeline for this is not provided. Once fully phased out, users will no longer be able to create, edit, or share avatars. Traditional profile pictures will remain unaffected.
