Windows 11 Insiders are in for an exciting update that brings a new level of customization to their taskbar experience. Microsoft has rolled out a feature that allows users to reposition the taskbar, giving them the flexibility to place it at the bottom, top, left, or right side of their screens. This enhancement is part of a broader initiative aimed at rebuilding user trust, a commitment that Microsoft first hinted at back in March.
In addition to repositioning the taskbar, users can now adjust the size of the Start menu, with options for both “Small” and “Large” formats. This is particularly beneficial for those using devices with smaller displays, ensuring that functionality does not come at the expense of screen real estate. The ability to customize the alignment of icons within the taskbar further enhances the user experience, allowing for a more personalized interface.
Moreover, the Start menu is set to receive a more user-friendly layout. New toggles will enable users to show or hide sections such as “Pinned,” “Recommended,” and “All.” Notably, the “Recommended” section will be rebranded as “Recent,” a change that aims to better reflect its content, which includes recently installed applications and frequently accessed files. For those concerned about privacy during presentations or screen sharing, there’s also the option to hide personal details like names and profile pictures from the Start menu.
These features are expected to roll out in the coming weeks to the Experimental Channel, as Microsoft continues to prioritize user feedback and satisfaction. Diego Baca, the design director at Microsoft, emphasized the importance of this trust-building process, stating, “Start and taskbar are where that trust is tested most, every time you sit down at your PC.”
