The recent emergence of the Control mod has sparked a wave of experimentation among gamers, particularly with the newly released DLSS 5 .dll files. While some titles have embraced this technology seamlessly, others have yielded results that are less than desirable, occasionally resulting in visuals reminiscent of characters with unsettling distortions. A notable instance occurred when I integrated DLSS 5 into the review version of The Blood of Dawnwalker, which struggled to engage the DLSS pipeline effectively, leaving my semi-Vrakhiri character with an unexpectedly eerie undead aesthetic.

With the early access version of NBA 2K27 now available, the gaming community has eagerly disseminated the necessary files across the internet. Modders have been quick to adapt these tools, creating game-agnostic versions that allow players to integrate DLSS 5 into virtually any title of their choosing. The initial focus on Control has expanded, with mods like RenoDX and ShortFuse enabling users to experiment with DLSS 5 in a broader array of games. The process, while straightforward, does come with its share of quirks, a common theme in the world of PC gaming.

DLSS 5: A Visual Revolution

One aspect that has captured my attention—and was also highlighted by Andy during his hands-on experience with the technology at Gamescom—is the remarkable visual effects produced by DLSS 5 when applied judiciously. By selecting the optimal model (Model C, in my case) and adjusting the intensity to around 60-70%, players can achieve visuals that surpass the original graphics without veering into the territory of over-saturation or artificiality. However, it’s important to note that this technology is a significant resource drain; Nvidia has been transparent about the potential 50-60% drop in frame rates across various games, with even steeper declines observed at 4K resolution.

For instance, while running the Control mod on an RTX 5090, I experienced a drop from approximately 110 fps in standard mode to below 50 fps once DLSS 5 was activated—an expected outcome given Nvidia’s initial demonstrations utilized dual RTX 5090s. This performance hit is particularly pronounced for current-generation hardware, which lacks the tensor cores necessary for standard DLSS upscaling.

While it may not achieve photorealism, the enhancements brought by DLSS 5 in Football Manager 26 are noteworthy. Traditionally, achieving realistic player faces required extensive modding, often resulting in AI-generated profiles that lacked uniqueness. With DLSS 5, however, the game benefits from improved environmental lighting, enhanced pitch details, and more realistic shadows. This technology also extends its neural rendering capabilities to player profile pictures, significantly elevating the visual quality of regenerated players.

In essence, DLSS 5 enhances the overall aesthetic experience without overwhelming the game’s original design. The improvements in lighting and detail contribute to a more immersive environment, allowing players to enjoy a richer visual narrative.

How to Enable DLSS 5

Integrating DLSS 5 into games like Cyberpunk 2077 has proven to be a straightforward yet resource-intensive endeavor. The initial setup involved navigating Discord channels for the RenoDX mod, downloading the appropriate .dll files, and ensuring they were placed correctly within the game directories. However, the process has since been streamlined significantly.

The most efficient installation method currently available is through the ReShade HDR Installer (RHI) from GitHub. This tool simplifies the installation process, allowing users to select their installed games and apply the necessary DLSS tools with ease. It is crucial to remember that this modding approach leverages an unreleased feature, meaning results may vary based on individual setups.

Once in-game, players can access the ReShade menu and navigate to the RenoDX tab to adjust DLSS 5 settings. Unlike the official release, which will feature a simple toggle, these mods provide a level of customization that allows gamers to fine-tune their experience. However, this flexibility raises questions about artistic integrity, as some argue that such modifications could detract from the developers’ original vision.

Ultimately, while the potential for enhanced visuals is enticing, it is essential to approach these modifications with an understanding of their implications on both performance and artistic intent.
