Microsoft is updating even more parts of the Windows 11 UI with modern designs: Here’s what’s next on the list of overhauls

Windows has faced user dissatisfaction due to inconsistent user interface designs since Windows 8, which worsened with Windows 10. Windows 11, launched in 2021, introduced a consistent design language through the WinUI framework, modernizing various UI components and replacing older elements. Enhancements included a more consistent dark mode and updates to features like volume controls and context menus. Microsoft is revamping the File Properties dialog and the Start menu for improved speed and responsiveness while optimizing resource consumption. Context menus are also being redesigned for better customization and quicker access. Ongoing efforts aim to modernize legacy components of the OS, with a focus on performance and reduced memory usage.

Windows 10 LTSC 2021 has five months before security updates cost extra

Microsoft has announced that support for Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 will end on January 12, 2027, coinciding with the release of a final security update. Organizations can enroll in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program to maintain security updates beyond this date, which will cost per device in Year 1, with prices doubling each subsequent year until the program ends on January 8, 2030. ESU sales will start on September 1, 2026, and licenses are cumulative. The ESU program does not cover Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC, which is supported until January 13, 2032. Organizations using Microsoft’s cloud-based update services can receive a 25 percent discount on the Year 1 price. As of July, 16.9 percent of monitored devices were still running Windows 10, with migration to Windows 11 stalling due to compatibility issues and hardware requirements.

Google may finally fix a major frustration with Android’s Photo Picker

Google is enhancing the Android Photo Picker by integrating a built-in media editor, as indicated by the "EditFeature" class found in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 2. This editor will allow users to make quick edits, such as cropping and marking images, directly within the Photo Picker interface. The media editor aims to streamline the editing process, enabling users to edit media without leaving the Photo Picker, thus improving user experience and consistency across third-party applications. The feature is part of a Project Mainline module, allowing updates through Google Play System Updates. While the media editor is not yet active, further developments are anticipated.

Windows 11 will run better because of the Apple effect, says IDC

Apple's launch of the MacBook Neo has prompted Microsoft to reassess and improve Windows 11 due to user complaints about the operating system's performance and resource demands. Global PC shipments are projected to decline by 11.3% in 2026, with a significant drop of 20% expected in the fourth quarter, attributed to a memory shortage. Microsoft announced plans to reduce RAM usage in Windows 11, targeting completion by the end of 2026, which will benefit PCs with 8GB and above. Following the MacBook Neo's release, a benchmark showed that Windows machines had more RAM and storage than Apple's model, but performance issues persist, with Microsoft Word launching slower on Windows 11 compared to MacBooks. Microsoft is addressing these performance issues by replacing legacy components with the WinUI framework to reduce memory usage and enhance overall performance.

VPN provider built a script to block Microsoft’s hidden GDID tracking on Windows — Windscribe’s “deGDID” erases existing identifiers and blocks new ones from being created

Microsoft's Global Device Identifier (GDID) was instrumental in the FBI's arrest of an alleged hacker, raising privacy concerns among advocates. In response, Windscribe launched an open-source project called "deGDID," which removes the GDID from users' PCs but may disrupt certain Microsoft cloud services. The deGDID script can be executed via PowerShell and includes three execution flags: –Status (checks if GDID is active), –Status –Redact (logs with GDID redacted), and –Protect (removes GDID and prevents new identifiers). Users have reported effective functioning of the script, though it can cause issues with Microsoft applications. Windscribe notes that deGDID is a research project that will evolve, but it may not eliminate all GDID instances, and Microsoft retains access to previous keys.

Fields of Mistria 1.0 has been fully released after two years of early access, featuring significant updates and enhancements. The town's story is complete, with repairs following an earthquake finalized. Players can now experience ten heart events for datable characters, allowing for deeper relationships. Marriage and children have been introduced, enabling players to start families. The Saturday Market has two new merchants, Stillwell and Zorel. An achievements system rewards players retroactively, and there is no need to start a new save file to access the new content.
