For years, Windows has grappled with a patchwork of user interface designs that left many users feeling disenchanted. The issues began with Windows 8 and escalated during the lifespan of Windows 10, where various UI elements, frameworks, and icon styles were inconsistently integrated across multiple versions. This lack of cohesion contributed to a growing sentiment among users who favored competitors like Apple’s macOS, which is celebrated for its polished and cohesive aesthetic.
With the launch of Windows 11 in 2021, Microsoft took significant strides to rectify this situation. The new operating system aimed to modernize various UI components by adopting a consistent design language through the WinUI framework. Gradually, older and inconsistent elements have been replaced with updated designs that align with the fresh look of Windows 11. Enhancements to features such as volume and brightness controls, file sharing dialogs, and context menus have all contributed to a more unified user experience.
One of the notable improvements in Windows 11 is the enhanced dark mode, which has been applied more consistently across applications like File Explorer. Previously, the absence of dark mode support in certain areas fueled the perception that Windows lacked completeness. Earlier this year, Microsoft reiterated its commitment to modernizing the Windows 11 interface, promising to extend the use of WinUI throughout the operating system while also delivering performance enhancements that meet or exceed the capabilities of the legacy interfaces being replaced.
Modernized File Properties
Recent preview builds of Windows 11 have revealed that Microsoft is in the process of revamping the File Properties dialog within File Explorer using WinUI. This particular feature had not seen any significant updates in over a decade, and notably, it lacked support for dark mode. The transition to WinUI is expected to breathe new life into this legacy interface, with initial glimpses of the updated dialog already appearing in preview builds, particularly when inspecting files in the Recycle Bin.
In addition to the File Properties dialog, the Start menu is also undergoing a transformation with WinUI. The goal here is to enhance speed and responsiveness while reducing resource consumption. By leveraging a shared System Compositor for many WinUI interfaces, Microsoft aims to optimize memory usage, although it remains uncertain whether a complete redesign of the Start menu is on the horizon. As it stands, the company seems inclined to maintain the existing user experience, especially following the introduction of new customization options for the current Start menu.
Context menus in Windows 11, while not considered outdated, have also been identified as needing improvement. Microsoft is working on redesigning these menus to enhance their speed, responsiveness, and customization options. The forthcoming updates will introduce a more compact design, allowing for quicker access to actions while minimizing lag, particularly in menus with numerous items. Users will soon have the ability to tailor the context menu to their preferences, including the option to hide less frequently used actions.

Marcus Ash, the company’s CVP of Design and Research, recently indicated that efforts are underway to improve the tools necessary for expediting updates to legacy components of the OS, including applications like the Registry Editor.
