Windows may finally take no for an answer, adding a permanent opt-out for OneDrive backup nags

Microsoft has introduced a new feature in Windows 11 that allows users to permanently opt out of prompts encouraging them to back up files with OneDrive. The updated full-screen backup prompt now includes an "Opt out of backup" button, which was observed on PCs running stable Windows 11 25H2 builds without the OneDrive sync client installed. This option enables users to indicate their preference against OneDrive integration without uninstalling OneDrive or affecting existing files and synchronization settings. The feature aims to eliminate intrusive backup notifications that previously required users to either continue with OneDrive backup or postpone the prompt. Although the option appeared on at least one system in 2025, it is now being rolled out to a broader range of stable installations. The August 27 update notes from Microsoft do not mention this new opt-out button, suggesting it may be rolling out independently.

Microsoft Issues Windows 11 Version 26H2 to Release Preview

Microsoft confirms it accidentally installed new OneDrive app on Windows 11 PCs, and there’s no easy way to remove it yet

Here’s when Windows 11 26H2 will roll out, and what’s actually new on existing PCs

Windows 11 26H2 is expected to be released in October 2026 as an enablement package, primarily serving as a servicing update to enhance stability for enterprise users rather than introducing significant new features. The support for Windows 11 24H2 will end on October 13, 2026, while 25H2 will be supported until October 12, 2027. Windows 11 26H2 will integrate into the existing servicing model of 24H2 and 25H2, allowing users to upgrade quickly with a small update size of 174KB. The system requirements for 26H2 will remain the same as its predecessors. New features include the rebranding of Windows Backup to "Windows settings backup and restore," which will automatically back up user settings and select personal files to the cloud by default. Another feature, Point-in-time restore, will be enabled by default for 26H2 users, allowing the creation of system restore points. This update aims to provide a consistent user experience and enhance business continuity without being a full operating system upgrade.

ESU is free for users utilizing Windows Backup; otherwise, a one-time fee or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points is required. For devices not qualifying for ESU, alternatives include installing third-party antivirus software, upgrading to Windows 11, or switching to Linux. To enroll in ESU, users can navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, where an Enroll Now link will appear if eligible.

Approximately 21.4% of devices in small and medium-sized businesses and 16.6% in large organizations still run Windows 10, often due to budget constraints. Devices in industries like healthcare and manufacturing are particularly slow to adopt Windows 11. Windows 10 devices face nearly three times the number of active vulnerabilities compared to Windows 11, with 66.6% rated as high or critical. About 2.8% of Windows 10 systems do not meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11. A total of 18.7% of Windows devices are running unsupported operating systems, with 22.2% on versions that will reach end of support within six months, totaling 40.9% of systems that are unsupported or soon to be. The consumer ESU program will expire on October 12, 2027, after which many devices will transition to unsupported status.
