Microsoft’s Windows 11 Version 26H2 Enters Release Preview
This week, a notable absence in the usual rhythm of Microsoft’s Windows 11 updates caught my attention. The anticipated Tuesday of Week D in August passed without the arrival of new preview builds, prompting me to share my observations with Laurent and mention it during our recent Windows Weekly discussion. My expectation was that the forthcoming build would represent Windows 11 version 26H2, and since Tuesday, I have been diligently checking the Windows 11 update history site multiple times a day.
It appears my assumptions were correct. Microsoft is breaking new ground by releasing a version of Windows 11 to the Windows Insider Program ahead of its general availability later this year. This development aligns with my earlier speculations shared during Windows Weekly regarding a preview update in September, followed by a stable non-preview update in October. Only time will tell if this timeline holds true.
In an announcement post, Microsoft’s Stephen Lines stated, “Today, we are making this year’s annual feature update, Windows 11 version 26H2 (Build 26300.9278), available in the Release Preview Channel for customers to preview ahead of general availability later this calendar year.” He further explained that Windows 11 version 26H2 will be delivered as an enablement package (eKB), indicating that versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share a common servicing branch. This structure allows for a seamless integration of new features and enhancements, many of which may already be familiar to users, having been gradually introduced through monthly updates.
For individuals with PCs enrolled in the Release Preview channel, the opportunity to install Windows 11 version 26H2 is now available, though it requires manual initiation, a process still referred to as the “seeker experience.”
For those managing PCs within a business context, Windows 11 version 26H2 brings several noteworthy features and experiences. Enhancements such as Windows Backup, app actions from the Taskbar, and improvements to File Explorer, which were previously introduced but not enabled by default, are now accessible. Microsoft has indicated that organizations can deploy and begin validating Windows 11 version 26H2 on their PCs using Windows Update client policies and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), with Azure Marketplace set to become available later today.
Additionally, updates to the ISOs on the Windows Insider Program download site will soon reflect Windows 11 version 26H2, ensuring that developers and testers have access to the latest build.
