РОССИЯ – In a significant shift in its service offerings, MTS has introduced a fee structure for the use of VPNs and torrent services. The telecommunications operator has released a detailed guide outlining that traffic through file-sharing networks is not included in the standard package across any of its plans, necessitating separate payment for such usage.
New Fee Structure for VPN and Torrent Usage
Under the new policy, subscribers will incur a daily charge ranging from 80 to 87 rubles for utilizing VPN services. This fee encompasses a daily limit of 5 GB. MTS has classified “file-sharing networks” to include not only torrents but also “virtual private networks” (VPNs), certain online games, and P2P services. Essentially, any encrypted traffic that the operator cannot identify falls under this additional tariff.
The billing mechanism is designed to charge users only on days when they actively engage with these services. However, a caveat exists: if a user activates a VPN and neglects to deactivate it, charges will continue to accrue daily.
To mitigate potential costs, MTS has provided an option for users to block this service entirely. By doing so, VPN traffic over mobile internet will cease to function. Thus, subscribers face a straightforward choice: either pay the fee or forgo VPN access altogether.
Previously, reports from “ВЕДОМОСТИ Урал” indicated that operators have begun implementing separate charges for unlimited internet access, signaling a broader trend in the telecommunications landscape.
