Malicious Software Mining Operation Uncovered

A 35-year-old resident of Svetlogorsk has been implicated in a scheme involving the use of malicious software for hidden cryptocurrency mining, as reported by a Telegram channel associated with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Over the course of several years, this individual reportedly modified a “cryptojacker”—a type of stealthy virus miner—to exploit unsuspecting users.

The perpetrator embedded specialized code into free torrent downloads. Once these files were downloaded, the program would silently activate on the user’s computer, utilizing the device’s processor to mine cryptocurrency. This clandestine operation not only generated income for the individual but also significantly hampered the performance of the affected machines. Users found that even rebooting their devices did little to alleviate the slowdown.

According to the allegations, the Belarusian managed to earn approximately 1,000 rubles each month from this illicit activity. The virus was reported to have infected over 500 computers, extending its reach beyond Belarus to neighboring countries as well.
