Cameyo by Google is here to solve the “app gap” problem in ChromeOS

For over a decade, discussions surrounding ChromeOS in the enterprise have often followed a familiar pattern. The dialogue typically begins with enthusiasm for the platform’s security and manageability, only to be tempered by the inevitable caveat: the reliance on a critical legacy Windows application that organizations cannot forgo.

This persistent challenge, known as the app gap, has emerged as the primary obstacle to widespread enterprise adoption of ChromeOS. Traditional Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutions, while available, have proven to be cumbersome, costly, and less than user-friendly. They often result in a subpar experience, offering little more than a sluggish Windows desktop accessed through a browser tab.

In a significant development, Google has unveiled a groundbreaking solution: Cameyo by Google. This innovative first-party Virtual App Delivery (VAD) solution is being seamlessly integrated into the Google enterprise suite, marking a pivotal moment for IT administrators who have long awaited a robust app delivery option.

This is not the VDI you love to hate

It is crucial to note that Cameyo is not VDI. Instead, it represents a modern alternative crafted specifically to address the legacy app gap, devoid of the complexities and overhead associated with traditional virtual desktops.

Rather than streaming an entire resource-intensive Windows desktop, Cameyo’s VAD technology focuses on delivering only the applications that users require, securely and efficiently, to any device. This encompasses legacy Windows or Linux applications—be it a specialized ERP client, AutoCAD, or an older version of Excel with intricate macros. These applications can be accessed in two primary ways: streamed directly in the browser or delivered as Progressive Web Apps (PWAs).

The PWA delivery method is particularly noteworthy, as it provides users with the seamless experience of a native application, enabling them to run essential legacy applications alongside their contemporary web apps. From an IT perspective, this approach eliminates the complications associated with VPNs and firewall configurations.

The App Gap for ChromeOS is officially solved

This development is a game-changer for ChromeOS in enterprise settings. The longstanding “app gap” has hindered organizations eager to transition. With Cameyo by Google, this barrier is effectively dismantled.

IT departments can now confidently transition their entire fleets to ChromeOS—an operating system that boasts zero reported ransomware attacks ever. They can do so knowing that users will retain access to all essential Windows applications without disruption. This transition also allows organizations to fully embrace Google Workspace while still utilizing that one specialized Microsoft client that previously kept them anchored to legacy systems.

Securing the “Blind Spot” and adding AI

Moreover, this new solution addresses a critical “blind spot” for most Secure Enterprise Browsers (SEBs). While SEBs excel at securing web applications, they lack visibility and control over the 50% of client-based applications that operate outside the browser.

The combination of Cameyo by Google and Chrome Enterprise Premium is the only solution on the market that rectifies this issue. Here’s how:

  1. Cameyo publishes the legacy Windows application so it operates inside the managed Chrome Enterprise browser.
  2. This integration unifies the workspace, allowing Chrome Enterprise Premium’s advanced security and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) controls—such as preventing copy/paste—to govern those legacy applications for the first time.

As an added advantage, by incorporating these legacy applications into Chrome, organizations can layer Gemini in Chrome on top of them, introducing modern AI capabilities to applications that would otherwise remain untouched by such advancements.

This strategic initiative from Google represents a “flexible path to modernization,” providing enterprises with a viable route to transition to a secure, web-first future without relinquishing their past investments. The argument against ChromeOS due to the “app gap” is, for all intents and purposes, now a thing of the past.
