Windows 11 24H2 Faces New Video Playback Challenges
In a familiar twist of fate for Windows users, the latest update to Windows 11, specifically version 24H2, has introduced a new set of challenges, this time affecting video playback. Following the recent resolution of an audio issue, reports have surfaced indicating that users are now encountering difficulties when attempting to play copyrighted content.
According to Microsoft, the problems arise when the optional August update, KB5064081, is installed. This update, which was initially rolled out to enhance user experience with several new features, has inadvertently led to complications for digital TV applications, Blu-ray players, and DVD players.
The core of the issue lies with a legacy component known as the Enhanced Video Renderer, which is utilized by various video players to handle content protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) or High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). Users attempting to enjoy movies from their Blu-ray collections on their PCs may find themselves facing copyright protection error messages, unexpected black screens, or even instances where playback freezes or pauses.
Some Digital TV and BluRay/DVD applications might experience problems playing protected content after installing the August 29, 2025 Windows non-security preview update (KB5064081), or later updates. Applications using Enhanced Video Renderer with HDCP enforcement or Digital Rights Management (DRM) for digital audio might experience copyright protection errors, frequent playback interruptions, freezing or black screens. This issue does not impact streaming services.
In light of these developments, Microsoft has acknowledged the situation and is actively working on a resolution through upcoming updates. For the time being, users affected by these playback issues may need to consider alternative solutions, such as utilizing external DVD or Blu-ray playback devices or opting for streaming services to enjoy their favorite content seamlessly.
