Square Enix has made a significant announcement regarding the future of its acclaimed MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV. The company revealed that it will officially cease support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, coinciding with Microsoft’s termination of security updates and mainstream support for the operating system.
In a statement, Square Enix articulated the challenges of maintaining support for Windows 10 once Microsoft halts its security updates. While players may still be able to enjoy Final Fantasy XIV on their Windows 10 systems post-cutoff, the publisher clarified that technical support for any arising issues will no longer be available. “You will likely be able to play Final Fantasy XIV on Windows 10 systems even after the end of support,” the company noted, emphasizing that troubleshooting assistance would not be guaranteed, although some help might be offered on a case-by-case basis.
To ensure continued access to full support for the game, players are encouraged to upgrade to Windows 11. Alongside this change, Square Enix will also revise the minimum system requirements for the Windows version of Final Fantasy XIV, effective October 15, 2025.
For those hesitant to transition to a new operating system, Microsoft provides a one-year extended security update subscription for . Alternatively, players can opt for a free solution that maintains Windows 10’s security until October 2026, though this requires backing up PC data to the cloud using Windows Backup.
Players looking to avoid Windows entirely have several alternatives. Final Fantasy XIV is also available on PlayStation 5, Xbox, and macOS, with robust crossplay support across all platforms. This means that Windows 10 users can seamlessly switch to any of these versions and continue their adventures without losing progress.
