Google offers free ChromeOS Flex upgrade for Windows 10 users

Over 500 million Windows 10 PC owners find themselves at a crossroads, unable to upgrade to Windows 11 and potentially exposed to security vulnerabilities. In a timely response, Google has stepped in with a solution: a complimentary upgrade to ChromeOS Flex, now readily available for these users. This initiative is designed to transition unsupported PCs to a more secure operating system without imposing any financial burden on the users.

The backdrop to this development is the conclusion of support for Windows 10 in October 2022, which left many users grappling with the dilemma of either investing in new devices or continuing to operate on an outdated system. To facilitate the transition to ChromeOS Flex, Google has introduced a new USB Kit, priced at approximately or €3, which is reusable. In collaboration with Back Market, the tech giant aims to assist users in installing ChromeOS Flex on their existing PCs or Macs.

As Microsoft offers a free extended support update program for Windows 10 users, set to conclude in October 2023, many have opted to remain on an unsupported operating system due to the slow uptake of Windows 11. ChromeOS Flex presents an opportunity for users to extend the lifespan of their devices while simultaneously reducing electronic waste. Google emphasizes that the manufacturing process of a new laptop significantly contributes to its carbon footprint.

According to Google, transitioning to ChromeOS Flex can lead to an average energy consumption reduction of 19% compared to other operating systems. This focus on energy efficiency, coupled with device longevity, seeks to alleviate the environmental impact associated with tech waste.

However, the choice to migrate from Windows to ChromeOS is not without its controversies. While many users face an uncertain future with their current devices, Google’s update offers a viable alternative for those looking to upgrade to a modern operating system. Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to enhance older Windows 11 versions automatically, leveraging AI to determine the optimal timing for improvements. Currently, automatic upgrades for eligible Windows 10 PCs are not in place, but Microsoft may revisit this strategy following the end of extended support in October.
