Huawei has unveiled its latest innovation in the realm of portable computing with the MateBook Fold, a remarkably thin folding laptop that rivals the sleekness of modern smartphones. When unfolded, this device boasts a mere thickness of 7.3mm (approximately 0.3 inches), and when closed, it measures 14.9mm (around 0.6 inches). For context, Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Fold, a competitor in this niche, measures 8.6mm (0.34 inches) when unfolded and 17.4mm (0.68 inches) when folded.
Currently, the MateBook Fold is exclusively available in China, priced at approximately ,300. This device features an impressive 18-inch OLED display that folds at a 90-degree angle, creating a 13-inch upper screen that emulates the traditional laptop experience, albeit with a digital keyboard replacing the physical one. Weighing in at just 1.16kg (around 2.6lbs), the laptop is designed for mobility without compromising on performance.
The display offers a stunning 3.3K resolution (3296 x 2472) and achieves peak brightness levels of up to 1600 nits, ensuring vibrant visuals for users. Additionally, the MateBook Fold comes equipped with robust specifications, including up to 32GB of RAM and a generous 2TB of storage capacity.
Significantly, this launch also marks the introduction of Huawei’s proprietary operating system, HarmonyOS 5, to the PC market. Initially launched on Android devices, HarmonyOS has transitioned to PCs following Huawei’s loss of access to Microsoft Windows due to U.S. sanctions in March. Alongside the MateBook Fold, HarmonyOS 5 will also be featured on the new MateBook Pro, highlighting Huawei’s commitment to innovation in the face of challenges.
