The third-party DuoWOA Project has made significant strides by releasing the Windows 10 Andromeda OS firmware along with installation instructions specifically for the first-generation Microsoft Surface Duo. This development has been highly anticipated by enthusiasts who have longed for a taste of the operating system that Microsoft initially designed for the device before pivoting to Android prior to its launch.
With the introduction of Andromeda OS, users now have the opportunity to explore a unique operating system that was once a vision for the Surface Duo. However, it is important to note that several functionalities are not yet operational. Key features such as sensors, cellular data, sleep mode, and brightness control remain inoperative, indicating that further adaptations are necessary for a fully functional experience. Additionally, users should be aware that elevated device temperatures are common when running Andromeda OS, as reported by the development team.
The commercially released Surface Duo is equipped with two 5.6-inch AMOLED panels boasting a resolution of 1800×1350. Under the hood, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, complemented by 6GB of RAM and storage options of either 128GB or 256GB. The device is also supported by a 3,577 mAh battery featuring 18W charging capabilities, ensuring that users can stay connected throughout the day.
