Microsoft has unveiled a significant update to its Edge web browser’s release schedule across all platforms, introducing a new rhythm that promises to enhance user experience. The tech giant will now roll out new versions of Edge every two weeks, a shift from the previous monthly cadence.
Enhanced User Experience
In a blog post released earlier today, Microsoft stated, “Microsoft Edge is moving to a two-week release cycle, bringing new features and improvements to users and organizations faster than ever.” This transition aims to provide customers on the Stable channel with a more consistent flow of updates. The practical impact of this change means that while updates will occur more frequently, they will be more manageable in size, delivering approximately half the amount of new content with each release.
This approach ensures that users are less likely to experience overwhelming changes, as the more frequent updates will be half as big. Consequently, the overall volume of features and changes introduced monthly remains relatively stable.
Microsoft emphasizes that this new schedule benefits both individual users and enterprises alike. The company noted, “Security and platform improvements reach your users faster, and each change set is smaller, which can make validation more manageable.” This streamlined process is expected to enhance the overall security and functionality of the browser.
Interestingly, Microsoft is not alone in this shift; Google Chrome announced a similar move to a two-week release cycle back in March, indicating a broader trend within the industry towards more agile development practices.
As Microsoft embarks on this new journey with Edge, users can look forward to a more dynamic and responsive browsing experience, reflecting the company’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in the digital landscape.
