Windows 11 has recently welcomed its latest major feature update, 25H2, which rolled out just last month. In a swift turn of events, whispers of an upcoming “26H1” release have emerged, and Microsoft has confirmed its existence with the introduction of Preview Build 28000 in the Canary channel of the Insider Preview program.
Details on 26H1 Release
The 26H1 update is currently in its testing phase and is expected to officially launch early next year. This particular update is tailored for a select group of users, with various reports suggesting a focus on ARM architecture. Speculation has arisen around potential candidates for this update, notably the Snapdragon X2 Elite and Nvidia N1X systems, especially as Qualcomm gears up for the release of its new chips in early 2026, coinciding with the anticipated 26H1 rollout.
While the implications of this update are intriguing, Microsoft has refrained from naming specific technologies in its announcement. The company clarified, “26H1 is not a feature update for version 25H2 and only includes platform changes to support specific silicon. There is no action required from customers.” This mention of “specific silicon” has fueled speculation regarding the involvement of Snapdragon and Nvidia’s forthcoming chips.
Historically, Windows 11 has adhered to an annual release schedule, introducing a single feature update in the latter half of each year. This pattern has led to the naming convention of updates as “22H2,” “23H2,” “24H2,” and so forth. The introduction of 26H1 signifies a notable shift, marking the first time Microsoft has planned a major update for the beginning of the year, albeit primarily to enhance support for specific ARM silicon.
According to Windows Insider, Preview Build 28000 serves as the base RTM build for Windows 11 26H1. This means that Microsoft is poised to finalize this version and distribute it to OEMs, potentially including Qualcomm and Nvidia, allowing them to begin integrating it into their systems.
