Microsoft announces Mac mini-sized PC, but it only works online

Microsoft has unveiled its latest innovation, the “Windows 365 Link,” during the Microsoft Ignite 2024 conference, a gathering dedicated to developers and IT professionals. This new device, reminiscent of Apple’s recently launched M4 Mac mini in size, offers a distinct approach to computing. Unlike the Mac mini, which operates as a standalone computer, the Windows 365 Link is designed to function solely through cloud connectivity.

Microsoft now has a Mac mini competitor – sort of

Visually, the Windows 365 Link presents itself as a compact black box, featuring a selection of ports on its rear. While it shares a similar footprint with the Mac mini, the internal workings of these devices diverge significantly. The Mac mini is powered by advanced M4 or M4 Pro chips, providing robust performance. In contrast, the Windows 365 Link boasts modest specifications, as its primary function is to stream Windows from the cloud rather than operate on a local system.

Targeted primarily at corporate clients, Microsoft envisions the Windows 365 Link as a cost-effective alternative to traditional, bulky hardware. The concept revolves around providing a small, affordable device that leverages internet connectivity to access the capabilities of more powerful cloud-based computers. Essentially, it serves as a gateway for running cloud virtual machines.

Details regarding the technical specifications remain sparse. What is known is that the device is equipped with 8GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and an unspecified Intel processor. However, the limited internal hardware is less significant, as its role is primarily to facilitate the streaming of cloud content.

On the connectivity front, the Windows 365 Link features a USB-C port, two USB-A ports, DisplayPort, HDMI, and Ethernet. Additionally, it supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, ensuring seamless wireless communication.

As highlighted by The Verge, Microsoft positions the Windows 365 Link as a secure option for IT consumers. With all data encrypted in the cloud, there is minimal risk of offline data theft or hacking. However, this reliance on internet connectivity also means that the device becomes non-functional without an active connection.

Set to launch next year, the Windows 365 Link will retail for 9, with an additional requirement for a Windows 365 subscription starting at per month.

While the concept is intriguing, comparisons to the Mac mini are inevitable. Priced only 0 higher, the Mac mini offers superior hardware and operates on a local system, making it a formidable choice for many users. As noted in a recent analysis on 9to5Mac, the latest Mac mini stands out as an exceptional desktop computer, combining power, elegance, and affordability.
