Paint 3D, once heralded as a significant evolution of Microsoft’s classic Paint application, is set to exit the Microsoft Store later this year, marking a notable shift in the company’s strategy. Initially launched as part of Microsoft’s initiative to cater to creators with Windows 10, Paint 3D was even poised to take the place of the original MS Paint. However, the tides have turned.
Transitioning Focus
According to a recent support note from Microsoft, “Paint 3D is deprecated and will be removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4th, 2024.” This announcement comes with an in-app notification for current users, alerting them to the impending discontinuation of support. For those who still wish to engage with 3D content, Microsoft recommends transitioning to its 3D Viewer app.
In a strategic pivot, Microsoft has redirected its attention to enhancing the traditional Paint app within Windows 11. The updated version now boasts features reminiscent of Photoshop, alongside the integration of AI-powered tools, signaling a commitment to refining user experience.
Paint 3D’s removal is part of a broader trend within Microsoft, where various Windows features and applications have faced discontinuation. Last year, Windows Mixed Reality was similarly phased out, and the integration of Microsoft Teams within Windows 11 also came to an end. Looking ahead, the company has announced plans to cease support for Android apps on Windows 11 next year, further illustrating its evolving landscape.
