Microsoft confirms that a stack of bad Windows updates is causing boot issues

Windows 11 has encountered significant challenges following the January Patch Tuesday, with a series of perplexing bugs impacting user experience. Among the most troubling issues reported is the inability of certain PCs to shut down properly. However, the most alarming concern revolves around boot failures, particularly affecting commercial devices running Windows 11.

Initially, it was easy to attribute these boot issues solely to the January update. Yet, Microsoft has clarified that the situation is more complex. The problems appear to stem from a combination of the January update and a flawed December update, resulting in a cascading effect rather than a singular malfunction.

Understanding the Boot Issues

As highlighted by Bleeping Computer, affected Windows 11 machines are encountering a “UNMOUNTABLEBOOTVOLUME” Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error, preventing them from accessing the operating system. This has raised alarms among users and IT professionals alike.

According to Susan Bradley from Ask Woody, the root of the issue can be traced back to the December security update. Microsoft has acknowledged that devices which failed to install this update were left in a precarious state. The company stated:

“Recent investigations have determined this issue can occur on devices that failed to install the December 2025 security update and were left in an improper state after rolling back the update. Attempting to install Windows updates while in this improper state could result in the device being unable to boot.”

While Microsoft is working on a partial solution to prevent further installations that could lead to boot failures, it has been made clear that this fix will not rectify the issues for devices already affected. The company is currently investigating the underlying causes of these update failures and the improper states they create.

As it stands, Microsoft is limited in its ability to assist users whose devices are already experiencing BSOD errors. The focus now shifts to understanding the broader implications of these updates and ensuring that future patches do not exacerbate existing problems.
