Microsoft confirms Windows 11 24H2 trashes game audio, breaks date & time setting

A broken clock may be right twice a day, but for users of Windows 11 24H2, the latest update is proving to be a source of frustration. Microsoft has acknowledged that this update disrupts the date and time settings, specifically impacting the time zone feature. Additionally, users are reporting complications with USB audio devices, particularly in gaming scenarios.

According to feedback shared on the Feedback Hub, some users have noticed that their system fails to correctly set the time after waking from sleep mode, with issues occurring approximately one in five times overnight. Another user highlighted that automatic time synchronization falters following daylight saving time changes.

However, the time and date discrepancies are not the only concerns. A more pressing issue arises from the missing time zone settings in Windows 11 24H2. As reported by Windows Latest and subsequently confirmed by Microsoft, users without administrative privileges may find themselves unable to adjust their time zone settings in the Date & Time view. Microsoft clarified that while the update does not disrupt the time zone functionality itself, it does hinder the ability to toggle or modify these settings. Consequently, daylight saving time adjustments may not operate as intended, although the underlying policies and permissions remain intact.

In light of these challenges, Microsoft has suggested utilizing the Control Panel to modify time zone and other date and time settings as a temporary workaround while they work on a solution for the malfunctioning settings app. The company has stated, “Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update.”

While Microsoft is committed to addressing these bugs, it is anticipated that a patch for the date and time issues may not arrive until late January 2025. Yet, the date and time problems are overshadowed by another significant bug affecting audio functionality in Windows 11 24H2.

USB audio sound system broken in Windows 11 24H2

The audio-related bug, first identified by Windows Latest, causes sound levels to unexpectedly spike to 100% when using a USB digital audio converter (DAC). Microsoft has confirmed this issue in a recently updated support document. This problem is particularly pertinent for users with custom-built gaming PCs, who are more likely to utilize a USB DAC.

Users may encounter this audio anomaly under specific conditions:

  • When using a Creative Sound BlasterX G6 USB digital audio converter (DAC).
  • If their gaming PC is programmed to sleep and wake based on a set schedule.
  • When connecting and disconnecting the external sound system from the PC.
  • If they adjust the sound level and then disconnect the sound system.

Microsoft has identified that the root cause of the audio bug lies within a service known as “AudioEndpointBuilder.” The company is currently investigating this issue and plans to issue a fix in the near future.

It is important to note that despite these two issues, the Windows 11 2024 Update is not being blocked. In fact, Microsoft has recently lifted the upgrade block for a broader range of PCs as of November 2024.
