Microsoft Addresses Printer Glitch with New Update

In a move to rectify a previous misstep, Microsoft has rolled out a new update aimed at resolving issues stemming from a patch released earlier this year. The latest update, identified as KB5053657, targets users of Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, and was made available on March 25. This update seeks to mend the disruptions caused by a January patch that left certain printers malfunctioning.

The original problem arose when a printer driver was installed on devices, often triggered by powering up the device or connecting it to a power source. Users reported unexpected behavior from their printers, which began to produce random text and data, including network commands and unusual characters. Microsoft noted that these errant printouts frequently began with the header POST /ipp/print HTTP/1.1, followed by other headers related to the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP).

This glimpse into the technical intricacies of IPP is likely not the kind of exposure Microsoft and its partners had in mind. However, it’s plausible that some printer manufacturers might find a silver lining in users inadvertently wasting ink due to this glitch.

According to Microsoft, the issue was confined to USB-connected dual-mode printers that support both USB Print and IPP Over USB protocols. The glitch persisted throughout February and was acknowledged as a known issue in the March 11 update, which also included another notable hiccup. This update inadvertently removed the Copilot application from some devices, described by Microsoft as “unintentionally uninstalled and unpinned from the taskbar.”

Fortunately, the resolution for the Copilot issue did not necessitate a patch. Microsoft reassured users, stating, “This issue has been fixed, and the affected devices are being returned to their original state.” It’s worth noting that this “original state” likely refers to the reinstatement of Copilot, rather than a return to the simpler days before its introduction across many of Microsoft’s products.

As for the USB printing issue, Microsoft is optimistic that KB5053657 will effectively resolve the problem. However, another known issue remains unresolved: users of version 2411 of the Citrix Session Recording Agent continue to experience difficulties. Microsoft has confirmed that they are collaborating with Citrix to address this matter and will provide updates once a solution is reached.
