Microsoft Edge has undergone a significant transformation with the introduction of WebUI 2.0, a new framework that enhances the browser’s speed and responsiveness. This upgrade addresses previous performance issues, particularly those related to the use of JavaScript for loading various browser elements, which had contributed to slower load times and a less fluid user interface. Additionally, the challenge of code sharing across multiple features had further hindered Edge’s performance.
With WebUI 2.0, Microsoft has taken a proactive approach to ensure that Edge elements load more efficiently. Earlier this year, the company announced its plans to migrate Edge components to this new framework. While some settings have already transitioned to WebUI 2.0, others remain on the older code, indicating that the migration is still a work in progress.
Blazing fast load times
The first feature to showcase the advantages of the new markup-first code approach is Browser Essentials, which now loads an impressive 42% faster. This improvement is particularly noticeable on lower-spec PCs that lack SSDs and have limited RAM. Similarly, the Favorites bar benefits from a 40% increase in loading speed. Windows Latest has also explored several experimental elements based on WebUI 2.0, currently available in the Canary build of Edge, though they require manual activation to test their capabilities.
Among the features evaluated, the msInlineComposeWebUI stands out for its remarkable speed enhancement. This feature, which activates the Copilot compose box upon selecting a text snippet and clicking the “Rewrite with Copilot” button, has seen a dramatic reduction in loading time. In the previous version, users experienced a noticeable delay as a loading box appeared before the UI became accessible. However, with WebUI 2.0, the compose box opens almost instantaneously, eliminating the loading animation entirely.
Additionally, the msPdfWebui2 feature has also demonstrated a significant boost in launch speed. Microsoft is gradually integrating these WebUI 2.0 components into Edge, with many yet to appear in the stable version. Observers can note incremental enhancements in both usability and speed as the company continues its rollout.
Microsoft’s strategy involves a phased implementation of Edge elements, allowing for user feedback to shape future updates. This thoughtful approach may enhance Edge’s appeal in comparison to competitors like Chrome. However, there remains a desire among users for Microsoft to address the issue of excessive bloatware within the browser.
Recently, Windows Latest reported that Microsoft Edge is experimenting with methods to streamline the user experience by automatically decluttering the interface, such as relocating certain features to a more accessible menu. While these efforts are still in the early stages, they signal a commitment to refining Edge’s functionality and user experience.
