In a notable shift, Microsoft has announced that it will continue to provide security updates for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 for an additional three years, extending support until October 10, 2028. This decision comes after the company initially indicated that support would cease following the end of Windows 10’s support on October 14, 2025.
According to an updated support article released last week, Microsoft aims to assist users in maintaining security during their transition to Windows 11. The updates will be delivered through standard channels, ensuring that businesses and consumers can continue to use Microsoft 365 apps without interruption during this period.
This announcement marks a significant change from earlier communications, where Microsoft had warned that Office apps would no longer be supported on Windows 10 after October 2025. In a blog post from January, the company stated, “To use Microsoft 365 Applications on your device, you will need to upgrade to Windows 11.” Now, however, Microsoft is encouraging users to consider upgrading, while still providing a safety net for those who choose to remain on Windows 10.
Despite the extension, Microsoft continues to advocate for the adoption of Windows 11, emphasizing that businesses should make the transition to avoid potential performance and reliability issues in the long run. The company has been actively promoting Windows 11, declaring 2025 as “the year of the Windows 11 PC refresh” during CES earlier this year, even as the adoption rate of Windows 11 has yet to surpass that of its predecessor.
For users reluctant to upgrade their operating system or purchase new hardware, Microsoft is also offering Extended Security Updates for the first time. Consumers can opt for an additional year of updates for , while businesses have the option to purchase up to three years of extended updates, providing a flexible solution for those navigating the transition.
