Microsoft is taking significant steps to rectify the long-standing inconsistencies associated with dark mode in Windows 11. Recent preview builds have revealed that the company is finally applying dark themes to file operation dialogs, which have stubbornly remained bright since 2016. This update primarily impacts the copy, delete, and file permission windows that previously displayed in light mode, even when users had enabled dark mode across their systems.
The enhancements were uncovered in Windows 11 preview build 26100.5061, where the leaker Phantomofearth identified the updated interface elements through configuration utilities. Users will notice that while the window backgrounds now correctly showcase a dark gray hue, some buttons still appear in lighter colors, indicating that the work is still in progress.
The new Dark mode could come later this year with Windows update
Dark mode was first introduced in Windows 10’s Anniversary Update back in 2016, but Microsoft has not fully embraced its implementation, resulting in a disjointed mix of light and dark elements. This inconsistency has continued into Windows 11, where essential interface components such as the Control Panel, Run prompt, and file operation dialogs have remained bright white.
The current timeline suggests that these fixes may be rolled out with the Windows 11 25H2 update later this year. Industry experts have long pointed out the shortcomings of Microsoft’s dark mode implementation, particularly when compared to Apple’s more cohesive system-wide dark theme that debuted with macOS Mojave in 2018.
Although Microsoft has yet to officially announce these improvements, the development marks a notable advancement after years of user feedback. However, the company still faces the challenge of addressing other legacy interface elements, such as the Registry Editor and Group Policy windows, to achieve a truly consistent dark mode experience across the entire system.
