Microsoft has successfully addressed a significant issue that led to Remote Desktop sessions freezing on both Windows Server 2025 and Windows 11 24H2 devices. This resolution comes after a series of updates aimed at enhancing user experience and system reliability.
Details of the Fixes
The problem, which primarily affected Windows 11 systems, was initially resolved on February 25 with the release of the KB5052093 optional update. Subsequently, on April 8, Microsoft extended its remedy to impacted Windows Server devices through the KB5055523 Patch Tuesday cumulative update.
According to Microsoft, users who installed the February 2025 Security update (KB5051987) on Windows Server 2025 devices may have encountered freezing issues shortly after establishing Remote Desktop sessions. During these instances, both mouse and keyboard inputs became unresponsive, necessitating a disconnect and reconnect to regain functionality. Microsoft has urged users to install the latest updates, emphasizing that they include crucial improvements and resolutions for such issues.
Known Issue Rollback Implementation
In a proactive move last month, Microsoft employed a feature known as Known Issue Rollback (KIR) to mitigate similar Remote Desktop and RDS connection problems that arose from Windows 11 24H2 updates released since January 2025. This feature effectively reverses problematic non-security updates, thereby restoring system stability.
Redmond explained that users attempting to establish UDP connections from Windows 11 24H2 PCs to RDS hosts on Windows Server 2016 systems experienced frustrating RDP disconnections, with interruptions lasting up to 65 seconds. The recent cumulative updates have now provided a permanent solution to these disconnection issues, particularly benefiting home users.
Additional Updates and Warnings
Furthermore, Microsoft announced the resolution of a long-standing bug that caused blue screen errors and installation challenges on Windows Server 2025 systems equipped with over 256 logical processors. This fix has been included in updates released since the KB5046617 cumulative update from November’s Patch Tuesday.
However, Microsoft has also cautioned users that some Windows devices might encounter login issues with Windows Hello following the installation of the April 2025 security updates. Additionally, there are reports that certain Windows Server 2025 domain controllers (DCs) may become unreachable after a restart, potentially disrupting services and applications.
