Microsoft has acknowledged a significant issue affecting Windows 11 24H2 systems, specifically related to the playback of DRM-protected video content in Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital TV applications. Following the installation of the August preview update or subsequent updates, users reported experiencing freezes, black screens, and various playback disruptions.
Details of the Issue
The company noted that “some Digital TV and BluRay/DVD applications might experience problems playing protected content after installing the August 29, 2025 Windows non-security preview update (KB5064081), or later updates.” This situation arises particularly for applications utilizing Enhanced Video Renderer with HDCP enforcement or Digital Rights Management (DRM) for digital audio, leading to copyright protection errors and frequent interruptions during playback.
In response, Microsoft has rolled out KB5065789, the September 2025 Windows preview update, which has “partially resolved” the playback issues for some users. The company encourages users to install this latest update, emphasizing its importance in addressing various improvements and resolutions, including the aforementioned playback concerns. However, it is important to note that some applications relying on DRM for digital audio may still face challenges.
Additional Fixes and Updates
Alongside addressing the DRM-related issues, Microsoft has been proactive in fixing other problems stemming from the August 2025 updates. These include resolving installation issues for non-admin Windows users, which were caused by unexpected User Account Control (UAC) prompts. Furthermore, the company tackled severe lag and stuttering issues affecting NDI streaming software on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.
In the wake of the August cumulative updates, Microsoft also rectified a known issue that caused security updates delivered via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to fail, resulting in 0x80240069 errors. Just a week later, the company released emergency updates to address a bug that disrupted Windows reset and recovery operations on Windows 10 and Windows 10 Enterprise devices.
As Microsoft continues to navigate these challenges, users are encouraged to stay informed about updates and improvements that enhance their experience on the Windows platform.
