Writer’s block has met its match with the latest infusion of artificial intelligence into Microsoft’s Notepad app. Once a simple text editor, long overlooked, Notepad is now equipped with the capability to generate custom content based on any prompt provided by users. This exciting enhancement is available to those with a Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro subscription, marking a significant evolution for the application.
Enhanced Writing Experience
The recent update allows users to not only generate new text but also to refine it through follow-up prompts. This feature builds on the earlier introduction of the Rewrite tool, which enabled users to leverage generative AI to enhance existing text. Now, with a simple right-click at the desired location or by using the Ctrl + Q shortcut, users can access the Copilot menu and select “Write” to create fresh content seamlessly.
From its origins as a basic text editor, devoid of spellcheck until recently, Notepad is finally receiving the modern AI transformation it has long deserved.
Broader AI Innovations Across Microsoft Apps
Notepad is not alone in this wave of innovation. The Paint app has also undergone a significant upgrade, now harnessing generative AI to create custom stickers based on user prompts. Additionally, an Object select feature has been introduced, allowing users to isolate specific parts of an image for targeted editing. However, these advanced features are exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, such as the newly unveiled HP laptops.
Moreover, the Snipping Tool has received a noteworthy enhancement with the introduction of the Perfect screenshot feature. This functionality automatically edits screen captures, resizing them to eliminate the hassle of manual cropping. While the Perfect screenshot feature requires a Copilot+ PC, the new Color picker tool—capable of providing HEX, RGB, or HSL values for any color displayed on the screen—is accessible to all users.
As is customary, these innovative AI features will first be rolled out to Windows Insiders, paving the way for broader availability in the near future.
