Microsoft: Out-of-band update fixes Windows 11 hotpatch install loop

Microsoft has introduced the KB5072753 out-of-band cumulative update, aimed at addressing a recurring issue with the November 2025 KB5068966 hotpatch update on Windows 11 systems. This update is particularly relevant for users experiencing the inconvenience of the hotpatch being reinstalled repeatedly.

Details of the Update

According to Microsoft’s recent advisory regarding KB5068966, the Windows 11 25H2 hotpatch was inadvertently being reoffered after it had already been installed. The company clarified, “After installing the hotpatch update KB5068966 released November 11, 2025, affected devices repeatedly download and install the same update when a Windows Update scan is run.” This issue, while frustrating, does not impact the overall functionality of the system; it merely becomes apparent when users check the update history for timestamps.

On Thursday, Microsoft rolled out the KB5072753 hotpatch, which is now being distributed to all Windows 11 25H2 devices through Windows Update. This cumulative update not only resolves the aforementioned bug but also incorporates improvements and security fixes from the earlier KB5068966 security update.

Importantly, Microsoft emphasized that users do not need to install any prior updates before applying this new release, as it supersedes all previous updates for the affected versions. The company further advised, “If you have not yet deployed the November 2025 hotpatch update (KB5068966) on Windows 11, version 25H2 devices in your environment, we recommend you apply this OOB update (KB5072753) instead.”

Related Updates for Windows 10

Earlier this week, Microsoft also issued an emergency update for Windows 10, addressing installation issues related to the November 2025 extended security updates. Users encountered failures with error code 0x800f0922 (CBSEINSTALLERS_FAILED) on affected systems.

Additionally, just a week prior, the company resolved a separate issue that led to incorrect end-of-support warnings for Windows 10 users after the installation of the October 2025 updates. Many users reported seeing messages indicating that “Your version of Windows has reached the end of support,” despite having active security coverage or remaining under active support following the October 2025 Patch Tuesday.
