Microsoft rolls out a big Windows 11 Bluetooth upgrade, and AirPods now pair up to 15 seconds faster

If you own a pair of AirPods, the latest update to Windows 11, set to roll out in October 2026, may be worth your attention. This update introduces a significant Bluetooth enhancement that promises to reduce connection times by up to 15 seconds for Apple’s wireless earbuds. While similar improvements are expected for other Bluetooth headsets, specific metrics are currently available only for AirPods.

AirPods now connect up to 15 seconds faster on Windows 11

Historically, Windows has not seen a major Bluetooth update in nearly a decade, particularly during the Windows 10 era. While there have been enhancements to the Bluetooth user interface, the underlying connectivity has remained stagnant. With Windows 11, Microsoft has made strides by introducing Quick Settings, which streamlines the process of pairing and connecting headsets.

The Windows Settings interface has also evolved, making Bluetooth settings more accessible. However, some legacy features, like file transfer options, still rely on the older Win32 API. As the platform continues to develop, reliance on these outdated applets is expected to diminish.

Despite these advancements, users may still encounter issues with Bluetooth reliability. For instance, Quick Settings may inaccurately display the connection status of a headset, leading to confusion when attempting to disconnect. In some cases, attempting to disconnect a headset that appears connected can inadvertently reconnect it due to lagging status updates.

Windows 11’s October 2026 Update also fixes Bluetooth reliability

The October 2026 Update aims to address these concerns, promising a more dependable Bluetooth experience as the rollout progresses. Microsoft has highlighted improvements in everyday interactions, ensuring that Bluetooth headphones function more reliably on Windows, with enhanced pairing, reconnection, audio quality, and call performance.

A detailed list of Bluetooth-related fixes included in this update reveals several noteworthy enhancements:

  • During calls, adjusting the volume using the headset’s physical buttons or touch controls will now trigger the volume flyout in Windows 11, a feature previously limited to manual adjustments in Quick Settings.
  • Bluetooth will now accurately report the status of connected devices, minimizing the risk of accidental reconnections or disconnections.
  • A bug has been resolved where the Bluetooth radio remained active even when the toggle was switched off in the Bluetooth & devices settings.
  • Improved microphone compatibility is expected, which should reduce stuttering issues across various headsets, although Microsoft has not disclosed the complete list of compatible devices.

Additionally, users can anticipate enhanced Bluetooth audio quality and a reduction in bugs when utilizing Windows 11’s shared audio feature. To verify if you have received the October 2026 cumulative update or a newer version, navigate to Settings > System > About. If your Build number reads 26300.9711, 26200.9711, 26100.9711, or higher, the Bluetooth-related fixes should be rolling out to your device in the coming days.

Microsoft has suggested that enabling the “Get the latest updates…” option could expedite the update process, although it remains a gradual rollout, meaning some users may experience delays of several weeks before seeing these enhancements take effect.
