Microsoft says it accidentally broke Windows 10 Start menu, taskbar recent files feature

On April 22, Windows Latest brought to light the absence of the jump list feature for live tiles in the Start menu, a situation that has been confirmed by Microsoft. This revelation stemmed from extensive testing across various Windows 10 configurations and feedback from users experiencing the issue.

Understanding the Jump List Feature

In contrast to Windows 11, which utilizes static icons, Windows 10 retains the dynamic functionality of live tiles. These tiles offer a “Recent” section when users right-click on them, showcasing recently accessed files from applications such as Paint, Photos, and Notepad. This section serves as the jump list, also accessible by right-clicking the corresponding app pinned to the taskbar.

For instance, a right-click on the Photos app tile reveals a “recent” section that provides direct links to recently opened screenshots. However, following updates released after February 25, the jump list functionality experienced disruptions, preventing some users from accessing their recent files or photos.

Jump lists removed after update

According to an updated support document reviewed by Windows Latest, this issue was not an intentional change but rather a known problem under investigation. The malfunction arose as Microsoft attempted to integrate a new Microsoft account control experience into the Start menu, a feature that had been backported from Windows 11. This integration allows users to manage their Microsoft accounts directly from the Start menu, enhancing accessibility.

The disappearance of the jump list feature began with the release of the Windows 10 KB5052077 optional update on February 25, but the problem became more widespread following the April 2025 Update. Affected Windows 10 releases have been identified, and Microsoft has emphasized that the integration of the account manager into the Start menu aims to facilitate easier account switching and enhance user experience.

Fortunately, Microsoft has rolled back the recent changes to the Start menu UI, leading to the automatic restoration of the recent section on affected PCs. In tests conducted by Windows Latest, the jump list functionality has been successfully reinstated across all devices, indicating that the issue is largely resolved for the majority of users.
