Microsoft has addressed a known issue affecting certain users of Windows 11, version 24H2, who have encountered difficulties in receiving security updates. This problem arises specifically when Windows 11 is installed via CDs or USB flash drives that incorporate the cumulative updates from October or November 2024.
According to the company, the installation process can leave devices in a state where they are unable to accept further Windows security updates. This situation is unique to installations that include the aforementioned updates, which were released between October 8 and November 12, 2024. Notably, users who receive security updates through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog, or those using installation media with updates from December 2024 or later, are not affected by this issue.
Workaround available, no fix coming
While Microsoft initially indicated that a fix was in the works, the latest update to the Windows release health dashboard has classified the issue as resolved. The company now advises users who are experiencing problems to reinstall Windows 11, version 24H2, utilizing media that includes security updates released after December 2024.
To mitigate the issue, Microsoft recommends avoiding the installation of Windows 11, version 24H2, using media that contains the October or November 2024 security updates. Should a device become unable to receive further updates due to this issue, users can rectify the situation by reinstalling Windows 11, version 24H2, with media that includes the December 2024 monthly security update or any subsequent updates.
In a related announcement, Microsoft revealed that the January 2025 optional updates for Windows 11 will address another issue that has prevented non-admin users from modifying their time zone settings. Until this fix is fully deployed with the February Patch Tuesday cumulative updates, users who prefer not to install optional updates can utilize the Windows Control Panel as a temporary solution for adjusting the date and time settings.
