Microsoft: Some Windows PCs fail to install latest monthly updates

On Tuesday, Microsoft issued a cautionary note to its customers regarding potential complications with the installation of the latest monthly updates on certain Windows devices that have transitioned to Windows 11 versions 24H2 or 25H2. Users may encounter error codes 0x80073712 or 0x800f0993 when attempting to install the cumulative updates for June 2026.

Details of the Issue

The company indicated that a small fraction of devices running Windows 10 versions 22H2 and 21H2, as well as Windows 11 version 23H2, could experience failures during the update process after being upgraded to the aforementioned Windows 11 versions. This information was highlighted in a service alert initially noted by Microsoft MVP Susan Bradley.

Upon facing this issue, users will find that their devices are unable to install monthly Windows updates. A visit to Settings > Windows Update > Update history may reveal that updates have failed with the specified error codes.

For those investigating the Windows Update log files on the affected devices, the errors 0x800f0993 (PSFXEREBASEHYDRATIONCANDIDATESMISSING) or 0x80073712 (ERRORSXSCOMPONENTSTORE_CORRUPT) will be evident during the update installation attempts.

Proposed Solutions

Microsoft has assured users that a resolution for this known issue will be deployed to all unmanaged enterprise devices and personal PCs (Home edition) following a system restart. The company noted, “No new devices in these categories should be affected by this issue starting from May 19, 2026, 6:30 p.m. PT. Restarting the device might allow the resolution to apply sooner. No other action is required beyond a device restart.”

For devices already impacted, Microsoft has released specific Windows updates as part of its June 2026 Patch Tuesday. These updates are designed to install automatically during upgrades to Windows 11, thereby preventing the issue from arising.

However, it is important to note that the problem will not be rectified on systems that have already been upgraded to Windows 11 versions 24H2 or 25H2. Users on these devices are advised to remove the affected package to unblock update installations by executing the following command in an elevated Command Prompt:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:PackageforRollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~26100.1742.1.10

If the aforementioned mitigation does not resolve the update issue, users may need to consider performing a Windows 11 in-place upgrade.

In recent months, Microsoft has addressed several challenges related to the Windows update installation process. For instance, in April, the company released an out-of-band update to rectify issues stemming from the March 2026 non-security preview update (KB5079391), which also resulted in 0x80073712 errors during deployment. Additionally, in May, Microsoft alerted customers about potential Windows Update failures following the installation of the January 2026 optional non-security preview updates in restricted network environments. More recently, another known issue causing failures and 0x800f0922 errors during the installation of the May 2026 Windows 11 security update (KB5089549) was resolved.
