Microsoft to drop support for Snapdragon 850 powered PCs with the next version of Windows

In a significant update for users of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 850 processor, Microsoft has confirmed that the recently launched Windows 11 version 26H2 will mark the end of official support for this second-generation Windows 10 on Arm system-on-chip (SoC). This announcement was made public on the Windows 11 Lifecycle Policy page, where it is clearly stated: “Windows 11, version 26H2 is the last version that will support devices with Snapdragon 850 processors.”

The Snapdragon 850, introduced in 2018, was notable for being the first chip specifically designed for Windows, a departure from the earlier Snapdragon 835, which was originally a repurposed smartphone chip. While Windows 11 had previously ceased support for the Snapdragon 835, the latest news indicates that the Snapdragon 850 is now following suit.

Implications for Users

Devices powered by the Snapdragon 850 will still be able to install the current version update, but they will not be eligible for the upcoming version 27H2 next year. Windows 11 version 26H2 will continue to receive support for a period of 24 months, providing users with essential security updates during this timeframe. However, once this period concludes, devices utilizing the Snapdragon 850 will find themselves without official support, potentially leaving them vulnerable to security risks.

Despite the possibility of running Windows 11 on unsupported chips for an extended duration, the official stance is clear: the Snapdragon 850 will no longer receive support in future versions of Windows. As technology continues to evolve, users will need to consider their options moving forward, particularly if they wish to maintain a secure and up-to-date computing experience.
