Microsoft has unveiled an exciting enhancement for Xbox controllers on Windows 11, introducing a new functionality that allows users to access the Task View switcher with a simple long press of the Xbox button. This innovation aims to streamline the navigation experience between applications and games on gaming PCs.
Enhanced Navigation for Gamers
Currently in testing with Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel, this update redefines the operation of the Xbox button on controllers connected to Windows 11 systems. By long pressing the Xbox button, users can now effortlessly open Task View, which serves as Microsoft’s built-in app and window switcher. Not to worry, the traditional function of shutting down the controller remains intact, accessible by pressing and holding the Xbox button for an extended period.
This development aligns seamlessly with Microsoft’s broader vision for handheld gaming PCs running Windows 11. The forthcoming Xbox Ally devices are set to incorporate similar functionality, where the Xbox button will launch a task switcher optimized for portable gaming. Enhancements to the task switcher interface for handhelds include new animations, although it remains uncertain if these visual upgrades will also be available for desktop gaming PCs.
The single-press function of the Xbox button continues to operate as before, opening the Game Bar interface. This feature allows users to access a variety of gaming widgets, performance metrics, and other gaming-related tools. This dual-functionality approach ensures that gamers have quick access to both system-level navigation and gaming-specific resources.
Microsoft initiated the testing of these changes through the Windows Insider Program’s Dev Channel in September 2025. The update is anticipated to be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in the upcoming months, reflecting Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing the gaming experience on its operating system.
