Microsoft is making strides in enhancing user experience with Windows 11 by introducing new customization features for the recently launched Copilot key. This key, which is set as the default to open Microsoft’s Copilot app, is now being tested for its ability to launch alternative applications, providing users with greater flexibility.
Customization Features for Beta Testers
A new beta build of Windows 11 has been rolled out, allowing testers to explore these customization options. According to the Windows Insider team, users can now designate the Copilot key to launch any app that is MSIX packaged and signed, ensuring that it meets security and privacy standards. Until a user opts for a different application, the key will continue to activate the Copilot app on devices where it is installed.
This development marks a significant evolution in Windows keyboard design, the first major change in three decades. The introduction of the Copilot key aligns with Microsoft’s strategy to encourage users to engage with its AI assistant. Earlier this year, new Copilot Plus PCs began shipping with this key, although the latest 24H2 update has transformed the Copilot experience into a web app, limiting its integration with Windows 11 settings.
As it stands, the web app version of Copilot does not allow users to control various system settings, such as enabling dark mode. The future direction of the Copilot experience within Windows remains uncertain, particularly regarding whether the Copilot key will evolve to function similarly to the Windows key for launching shortcuts.
With the customization feature currently available to beta testers, it is anticipated that all Windows 11 users will gain access to this functionality in the forthcoming months.
