Mysterious Windows 11 “actions” menu appears in latest preview build — here’s what it’s for

As the week unfolds, Microsoft has begun the rollout of a fresh Windows 11 preview build for its Dev Channel testers. This latest iteration introduces an intriguing addition to the Settings app: a new menu titled “Actions.” This feature empowers users to manage which applications can present themselves as suggested actions throughout the operating system.

Enhancing User Control

Currently, the only instance where applications manifest as contextual suggestions is within the Click To Do feature, which is exclusively available on Copilot+ PCs. The newly introduced Actions menu provides a comprehensive overview of all applications that are engaging with this functionality, allowing users to toggle their visibility at will.

It’s worth noting that these enhancements follow Microsoft’s earlier expansions into Click To Do and AI integration within Windows Search over the summer. However, access to these features remains limited to Copilot+ PCs, which require a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of 40+ TOPS for full functionality.

In addition to these developments, Microsoft is reportedly gearing up to unveil more “proactive” Copilot features throughout the Windows 11 interface later this year. These forthcoming enhancements aim to enable the AI assistant to suggest actions, tasks, and activities based on users’ current engagements across various surfaces of the operating system, rather than being confined solely to Click To Do.

Given this trajectory, the introduction of a settings menu within the Windows Settings app to configure suggested actions appears to be a logical step forward. This is particularly relevant as third-party applications may also seek to integrate into this proactive Copilot experience, further enriching user interaction within the Windows ecosystem.
